Debenham Lunch Club

Originally set up in conjunction with the Eye Volunteer Centre, this mission is a way of bringing together the elderly, almost housebound and often lonely people of the surrounding community. It is a place where the elderly can chat, spend time together and have lunch cooked and served for them. A hot meal is provided ranging from roasts, shepherd’s pies, casseroles, fish dishes- all good home cooking. Home baking volunteers provide cakes for pudding. These can be taken away if guests are too full to eat them after their meal. This all happens on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the United Reformed Church, Chancery Lane, Debenham (please use the side entrance). We also have friends from the chapel who help out.

A team of volunteers give their time freely. There is a cook in charge, with three kitchen helpers who prepare food, wait on table and wash up. Our drivers pick up and take home some guests; whilst others are able to walk to the chapel. We have a telephone volunteer as well. We now have less people coming in from Eye but over 20 from the Debenham area including the Coopersfield sheltered housing building in the town. We are fairly full at the moment, having built up our numbers over time from the 20’s to the 30’s. We desperately need reserve drivers and reserve kitchen helpers – if anyone has spare time during the middle of the day on Wednesdays and would like to help, we would love to hear from you. We can offer a ‘taste and see’ session if you are unsure.

If you would like to serve in this way please email
